Church & Dwight: Will Innovative New Products Drive Earnings Much Higher?

Church & Dwight (NYSE: CHD  ) , the company behind very popular brands such as Arm & Hammer, Trojan, First Response, and Oxi Clean, has watched its stock outperform the overall market in 2014 and earnings have played a key role. Another strong report could add fuel to the rally, and its first-quarter results are due out in a couple of days. Let's take a look at the most recent earnings release, expectations for the upcoming report, and take a quick look at one of its top competitors, Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) , to determine if we should buy in right now or if we should wait to see what the quarter holds.

The last announcement 
On Feb. 3, Church & Dwight released its fourth-quarter report to cap off a great fiscal 2013. Here's a breakdown of the results:

Earnings per share increased 14% and revenue increased 1.6% year-over-year, driven by global volume growth of 5.2%. Organic sales rose 2.3% and this exceeded the company's original expectations of 1.5%-2% growth. The company's gross profit increased 3.7% to $371.7 million and the gross margin was very strong, expanding 90 basis points to 45.2%.

Although the statistics listed above are impressive, the highlights of the report came when Church & Dwight made two announcements, a dividend increase and the authorization of a share repurchase program. First off, the quarterly dividend was raised by 11% to $0.31, which gives the stock a yield of roughly 1.8% at current levels. It is also worth noting that this was the 18th consecutive year with a dividend increase. Secondly, the board of directors authorized the repurchase of $500 million worth of its common stock, effective immediately. In case you are not familiar, repurchasing shares reduces the amount of share available in the market. This in turn boosts earnings per share, making the remaining shares more valuable.

In summary, the earnings and revenues for the quarter may have missed expectations, but Church & Dwight more than made up for it with the dividend hike and share repurchase program. The company's stock has reacted by moving more than 11% higher in the months since, setting new highs along the way.

Expectations & what to watch for
First-quarter results are due out before the market opens on May 1. Analyst expectations may seem dim, but there is a positive reason for this. Here's an overview:

These estimates call for earnings per share to decrease 3.9% and revenue to increase 0.6% as compared to the same period a year ago. This compliments Church & Dwight's expectations because it stated that the majority of its growth would take place in the second-half of the year due to the scheduled release of "innovative new products," which will result in increased expenses related to slotting, couponing, trade promotions, and marketing during the first half. New products may cause one quarter's growth to stall, but could ultimately lead to future success.

With all of this being said and the key metrics aside, there will be three crucial updates and statistics to watch for:

It will be of the utmost importance for Church & Dwight to provide outlook on the second-quarter that is within analyst expectations. The current consensus estimates call for earnings per share of $0.68 and revenue of $811.8 million, representing year-over-year increases of 11.5% and 3.1%, respectively. Also, in terms of guidance, it will be important for the company to reaffirm its full-year guidance, which projects earnings per share in the range of $2.96-$3.07 and organic sales growth of 3%-4%.  Watch for comments on the success or failure to-date of the aforementioned "innovative new products." New products will play a pivotal role in earnings and revenue growth in 2014, so we need to be sure that they have begun to take share of their respective categories. We will also want to make sure that the company feels these products are on pace to bring in more revenue than was spent bringing them to the market and making consumers aware of their presence. In its fourth-quarter report, Church & Dwight stated that it had begun to "aggressively pursue" acquisitions, so investors will want to watch for updates on potential takeover targets. We have not seen a significant acquisition by the company in quite some time, so it would be great if it were to find the right acquisition at the right price. If Church & Dwight can meet or exceed analysts' earnings and revenue expectations and satisfy the three elements listed above, and I think it will, the company's stock will likely continue its run higher in 2014. For these reasons, I would be a long-term buyer going into the report and would add to the position if any weakness were to set in following its release.

A sign of things to come?
Procter & Gamble, one of the largest consumer product manufacturers in the world and the company behind competing brands such as Crest, Tide, Gain, and Old Spice, released its third-quarter results just a few days ago on April 23. Its report will give us a good feel for the condition of the industry and consumer, so here's what the company accomplished:

P&G's earnings per share increased 5.1% and revenue decreased 0.2% year-over-year as organic sales increased 3%. Global volume rose 3% during the quarter, and this was led by growth of 6% in the fabric and home care segment. It is also worth noting that none of P&G's five segments reported negative volume growth; this shows that all categories of consumer products saw increasing demand during the quarter.

I believe that P&G's strong quarter is a positive sign for Church & Dwight and adds support to the idea of initiating a long-term position. However, if you are not sold on Church & Dwight, take a closer look at P&G because it represents a great opportunity in itself.

The Foolish bottom line
Church & Dwight is set to release quarterly results in a couple of days, and the current analyst estimates seem well within reach. I believe that Foolish investors should strongly consider initiating a long-term position right now. The potential price appreciation and healthy 1.8% dividend can provide significant returns over time. Covanta Holding Corporation (Covanta), incorporated in April 16, 1992, is a holding company. The Company is a owner and operator of infrastructure for the conversion of waste to energy ( energy-from-waste or EfW), as well as other waste disposal and renewable energy production businesses. Covanta conduct all of its operations through subsidiaries which are engaged predominantly in the businesses of waste and energy services. The Company has one segment which is Americas and consists of waste and energy services operations primarily in the United States and Canada. The Company owns and holds interests in energy-from-waste facilities in China and Italy. The Company also has investments in subsidiaries engaged in insurance operations in California, primarily in property and casualty insurance. The Company�� EfW facilities earn revenue from both the disposal of waste and the generation of electricity, generally under long-term contracts, as well as from the sale of metal recovered during the energy-from-waste process. In the Americas, it processes approximately 19 million tons of solid waste annually. In total, these assets produce over 10 million megawatt hours of baseload electricity annually. The Company operates and/or has ownership positions in 46 energy-from-waste facilities, which are primarily located in North America, and 15 additional energy generation facilities, i! ncluding other renewable energy production facilities in North America (wood biomass and hydroelectric). The Company also operates a waste management infrastructure that is complementary to its core EfW business.

Energy-From-Waste Projects

Energy-from-waste projects have two purposes: to provide waste disposal services, typically to municipal clients who sponsor the projects, and to use that waste as a fuel source to generate renewable energy. The electricity or steam generated by the projects is generally sold to local utilities or industrial customers. The projects are capable of providing waste disposal services and generating electricity or steam. The Company provides these waste disposal services and sell the electricity and steam generated under contracts, which expire on various dates between 2012 and 2034. Many of its service contracts may be renewed for varying periods of time, at the option of the municipal client.

Tehe Company�� energy-from-waste projects generate revenue from three main sources: fees charged for operating projects or processing waste received; the sale of electricity and/or steam, and the sale of ferrous and non-ferrous metals that are recycled as part of the energy-from-waste process. Its customers for waste disposal or facility operations are principally municipal entities, though it also markets disposal capacity at certain facilities to commercial and special waste customers. Its facilities sell energy primarily to utilities at contracted rates or, in situations where a contract is not in place, at prevailing market rates in regional markets (primarily PJM, NEPOOL and NYISO in the Northeastern United States).

The Company operates, and in some cases has ownership interests in, transfer stations and landfills, which generate revenue from ash disposal fees or operating fees. In addition, it owns, and in some cases operates, other renewable energy projects in the Americas segment, which generate electricity from wood wast! e (biomas! s) and hydroelectric resources. The electricity from these other renewable energy projects is sold to utilities under contracts or into the regional power pool at short-term rates. For these projects, it receives revenue from sales of energy, capacity and/or cash from equity distributions and additional value from the sale of renewable energy credits.

The Company operates energy-from-waste projects in 16 states and one Canadian province, and are constructing an energy-from-waste project in a second Canadian province. Most of its energy-from-waste projects were developed and structured contractually as part of competitive procurement processes conducted by municipal entities. Its EfW projects can generally be divided into three categories, based on the applicable contract structure at a project: Tip Fee projects, Service Fee projects that the Company owns, and Service Fee projects that it do not own but operate on behalf of a municipal owner. At Tip Fee projects, it receives a per-ton fee for processing waste, and it typically retain all of the revenue generated from energy and recycled metal sales. The Company generally owns or leases the Tip Fee facilities. At Service Fee projects, it typically charge a fixed fee for operating the facility, and the facility capacity is dedicated either primarily or exclusively to the host community client, which also retains the majority of any revenue generated from energy and recycled metal sales. The Company also owns and/or operates 13 transfer stations and four ash landfills in the northeast United States, which it utilizes to supplement and manage more efficiently the fuel and ash disposal requirements at its energy-from-waste operations. The Company provides waste procurement services to its waste disposal and transfer facilities which have available capacity to receive waste.

Biomass Projects

The Company owns and operates seven wood-fired generation facilities and have a 55% interest in a partnership which owns another w! ood-fired! generation facility. The Company�� six facilities are located in California, and two are located in Maine. The combined gross energy output from these facilities is 191 megawatts. The Company generates income from its biomass facilities from sales of electricity, capacity, and where available, additional value from the sale of renewable energy credits. These facilities sell their energy output into local power pools or to local utilities at rates that are either fixed or float with the market.

Hydroelectric

The Company owns a 50% interest in two small run-of-river hydroelectric facilities located in the State of Washington, which sells energy and capacity to Puget Sound Energy under long-term energy contracts. The Company has a nominal investment in two hydroelectric facilities in Costa Rica.

Energy-From-Waste

The Company and Chongqing Iron & Steel Company (Group) Ltd. entered into an agreement to build, own, and operate a 1,800 metric ton per day energy-from-waste facility for Chengdu Municipality in Sichuan Province, People�� Republic of China. The Company also executed a 25 year waste concession agreement for this project. In connection with this project, it acquired a 49% interest in the project company. Construction commenced in 2009 and the facility began processing waste during the year ended December 31, 2011. The electrical output from these projects is sold at governmentally established preferential rates under short-term arrangements with local power bureaus. As of December 31, 2011, the Company owned 85% of Taixing Covanta Yanjiang Cogeneration Co., Ltd. which, in 2009, entered into a 25 year concession agreement and waste supply agreements to build, own and operate a 350 metric tons per day energy-from-waste facility for Taixing Municipality, in Jiangsu Province, People�� Republic of China. The Company will continue to operate its coal-fired facility.

The Company owns a 40% interest in Chongqing Sanfeng Covanta Environ! mental In! dustry Co., Ltd. (Sanfeng), a company located in Chongqing Municipality, People�� Republic of China. Sanfeng is engaged in the business of owning and operating energy-from-waste projects, providing design and engineering, procurement, construction services and equipment sales for energy-from-waste facilities in China. Sanfeng owns minority interests in two 1,200 metric tons per day, 24 megawatts mass-burn energy-from-waste projects (Fuzhou project and Tongqing project), and has a contract to operate the Chengdu project. Chongqing Iron & Steel Group Environmental Investment Co. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Chongqing Iron & Steel Company (Group) Ltd., holds the remaining 60% interest in Sanfeng. The solid waste supply for the projects comes from municipalities under long-term contracts. The municipalities also have the obligation to coordinate the purchase of power from the facilities as part of the long-term contracts for waste disposal. The electrical output from these projects is sold at governmentally established preferential rates under short-term arrangements with local power bureaus.

The Company owns a 13% interest in a 500 metric tons per day, 18 megawatts mass-burn energy-from-waste project at Trezzo sull��dda in the Lombardy Region of Italy. The project is operated by Ambiente 2000 S.r.l., in which the Company owns 40%. The solid waste supply for the project comes from municipalities and privately-owned waste haulers under long-term contracts. The electrical output from the Trezzo project is sold at governmentally established preferential rates under a long-term purchase contract to Italy�� state-owned electricity grid operator, Gestore della Rete di Trasmissione Nazionale S.p.A.

Independent Power Projects

The Company has a majority interest in a 24 megawatts (gross) coal-fired cogeneration facility in Taixing City, Jiangsu Province, People�� Republic of China. The project entity, in which it holds a majority interest, operates this project. T! he party ! holding a minority position in the project is an affiliate of the local municipal government. While the steam produced at this project is focused to be sold under a long-term contract to its industrial host, in practice, steam has been sold on a short-term basis to either local industries or the industrial host, in each case at varying rates and quantities. The electric power is sold at an average grid rate to a subsidiary of the provincial power bureau.

    Interestingly, several of the stocks from the health-care and technology industries that performed the best in yesterday's Dow decline were laggards this time around. On the health-care front, UnitedHealth (NYSE: UNH  ) fell 1.4%, giving up most of its gains from yesterday. Don't let today's performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) fool you. While the blue-chip index is down slightly, 24 of its 30 components are higher late in the trading session. The broader S&P 500 is also making moderate gains.

The discrepancy owes to the Dow's peculiar construction. Unlike other stock indexes like the S&P 500, which use market capitalization to weight the component parts, the Dow's weighting is based strictly on share price. As a result, the most expensive stock carries the most weight, and the cheapest stock the least.

The reason the Dow is underperforming its broader counterpart, in turn, is that its most heavily weighted component, IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) , is getting absolutely slammed today, down by 8% in afternoon trading. Selling for $190 per share, the technology and business services giant accounts for almost 11% of the Dow's daily deviations.

After the market closed yesterday, IBM reported earnings that are clearly not sitting well with investors. While the company's first-quarter net income rose by 3% to $3.4 billion, or $3 per share, it nevertheless missed analyst estimates of $3.05 per share. And on top of that, its quarterly revenue declined by 5% on a year-over-year basis.

    Dear Fellow Shareholder: The U.S. economy continues to gradually expand, building on the 5+ year recovery from the Great Recession. Employment levels are improving, though progress has been slower than expected. Inflation, for now, remains subdued. Investors have generally shrugged off world events that might otherwise cause high anxiety (ISIS and the Middle East, Russia and Ukraine, etc.). As attention now turns to when the Fed will raise short-term interest rates, it seems plausible that volatility may intensify as the stimulus security blanket is removed. In the meantime, companies are taking advantage of the artificially low interest rate environment and sanguine investor sentiment. Merger activity remains robust, fueled by cheap and readily available credit. The IPO market has been very active, headlined by the successful Alibaba offering in September. Corporate treasurers continue to issue loads of debt on attractive terms, locking in generationally low interest rates for long terms. While these conditions will not last forever, they have helped opportunistic managers accelerate equity value growth at many companies.Investment Commentary and Outlook After three years of seemingly non-stop gains, the stock market took a pause in the third quarter. Top Regional Bank Companies To Watch For 2014

After rising 67% in the past 52-weeks, it is understandable that the price targets for First Financial Bankshares (FFIN) are slightly under the bank's current market price of $57.69 per share. But, the premium paid for these shares appear to be warranted.

First Financial is one of the fastest growing regional banks in Texas (though all appear to be very fast growing) but it is one that has a very unique strategy that I believe gives the bank a competitive advantage that isn't found in most of the its regional peers.

I'm timid of the current market valuation of FFIN because it is getting a premium well above the industry average but, the bank is setting up for long-term growth and isn't showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon. With that said, below I have outlined why I like First Financial's strategy and financial position, followed by a review of the company's current valuation.

Strategy

A lot of times we see a growing regional bank increase deposit share and assets by purchasing other regionals in an area where they are weak and need more exposure. This makes sense for obvious reasons but other than increased visibility and access to the local markets, investors rarely understand why that particular location was chosen for growth over any of the other areas the bank occupies. With First Financial, this is absolutely not an issue and, to be honest, I'm extremely surprised that any bank in Texas has been able to dominate any area as much as FFIN has.
