NEW YORK (AP) --�J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP ) is sorry and it wants your business back.
That's the gist of its latest ad, a public "mea culpa" which the mid-priced department-store put on its YouTube and Facebook (NASDAQ: FB ) pages.
The ad, titled "It's no secret," shows shots of women working, playing with their children, and doing other everyday activities.
"Recently J.C. Penney changed," a voiceover states. "Some changes you liked, and some you didn't. But what matters with mistakes is what we learn. We learned a very simple thing, to listen to you."
The ad comes after the Plano, Texas-based company earlier this month fired its CEO, Ron Johnson, after 17 months on the job and rehired his predecessor, Mike Ullman.
Johnson's ambitious changes included getting rid of most sales and bringing in new, hip brands. The strategy was designed to attract younger, wealthier shoppers in a bid to reinvent the stodgy retailer, but it alienated Penney's loyal customers and caused sales to plummet.

Aside from the PetSmart earnings report, it should be said that Petmed Express Inc reported�Q4 2013 earnings on May 5th (sales slipped 4.9% to $48.6 million while net income came in at $4.5 million�verses $4.6 million���results that were blamed on severe winter weather). However,�PetSmart did get some downgrades recently with analyst saying there is increased competition in the pets space.

PetSmart Inc. (PETM) shares dropped 8%. The company on Wednesday reported first-quarter sales of $1.73 billion, which fell short of estimates. PetSmart also said it expects fiscal 2014 same-store sales to be ��elatively flat,��net sales growth in the low single digits, and per-share earnings of between $4.29 and $4.39. ��e did not achieve our sales goals, which were impacted by a challenging and volatile consumer environment and a competitive market,��said David Lenhardt, PetSmart�� chief executive.

Shares of�Staples� (NASDAQ: SPLS ) got hammered, falling 15% after posting a dismal fourth quarter, and saying it would close 225 stores, or more than 10% of its total, by next year. With nearly half of its sales coming online now, the nation's No. 1 office retailer said the store closures made sense, and would help cut costs by $500 million. Sales in the quarter fell 3.8%, to $5.87 billion, after adjusting for the extra week in 2012, below estimates of $5.97 billion, while its $0.33 per-share profit also missed estimates at $0.39. Online sales were up 10%, indicating that there may be hope for its e-commerce strategy, though same-store sales fell 7% at North American locations. First-quarter guidance was also weak as the company expects a profit of $0.17-$0.22 against estimates of $0.27. Staples' report makes clear that office retail is fundamentally changing and, while it may find success as an online retailer, I wouldn't expect it to have the same advantages it does as a bricks-and-mortar store.

Corporate inversions -- when a U.S. company buys or merges with a foreign firm and then technically moves the business to the other country -- have become something all politicians can happily revile. With their two-targets-in-one opportunity to bash either corporate greed or traitorous antipatriotism, Democrats and Republicans alike have an easy target to take aim at. So, the media rails over corporations that seek to extricate themselves from their tax obligations even as the Obama administration cracks down on companies moving overseas, as The Associated Press has reported. But there's a dirty secret: Much of what people think they know about corporate inversions is wrong and, in the grander scheme of things, inversions are small potatoes in the tax-avoidance world. "Inversions have been made into this political, moral issue, which sometimes clouds the reality," tax attorney Elan Keller of the law firm Caplin & Drysdale told . "Companies invert for a number of reasons ... having little to do with tax. It just so happens that in inverting they've been able to create a tax benefit. But there has to be [a bigger] underlying business reason to invert. Otherwise shareholders or the board aren't going to agree to it." 'Misrepresentation' of the Walgreen Case "The mega example that a lot of people had visceral reactions to was Walgreens (WAG)," said Martin Press, a tax attorney with the law firm Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart.
