JC Penney’s (JCP) shares have dropped today, though the selling pressure is nothing compared to what it has been recently. In fact, this feels more like a drift than anyone really placing big bets one way or the other.
BloombergBloomberg assesses the challenges facing the struggling retailer:
Now thatJ.C. Penney Co.Chief Executive OfficerMike Ullmanhas slowed the sales decline and amassed enough cash to fund two years of operations, he faces his biggest challenge since returning as CEO: a holiday season marked by price wars and penny-pinching consumers.
Analysts predict that U.S. retailers will discount heavily as they compete for shoppers concerned by joblessness and budget battles in Washington. While J.C. Penney has shored up its operations and finances, Macy Inc. (M) andKohl Corp. (KSS) can better afford to cut prices to drive traffic. If Ullman is forced to join the price war, he risks hurting profitability and burning cash at a faster than projected rate.

AlamyA Starbucks coffee shop in downtown Beijing, China. • There are prices to be paid for expanding your economy at a gallop, and China pays plenty of them. Today, anyone looking out across that nation's northern cities can see that winter has arrived there -- or rather, they can't, because the smog is so appallingly bad. In the city of Harbin, for example, visibility dropped to around 11 yards Monday, and small-particle pollution soared to 40 times higher than the international safety standard -- a record, by the way, though one we're sure nobody would want to break. It's a pretty clear case of cause and effect: Harbin's city heating systems were fired up on Sunday, and by Monday, you could barely see your hand in front of your face. • While we're on the subject of the world's rising economic superpower, China has a big complaint with Starbucks (SBUX) -- and it's probably the same one you have: Why does it charge so much for coffee? This may shock those of us in the U.S. who feel we're paying through the nose for our lattes, but Starbucks charges more in China than it does elsewhere -- about a third more than in the United States. • But back in America, the biggest news involving your money today is a no-brainer: the continuing glitches in the Obamacare websites. The administration has called out the computer cavalry, expanding the team that's trying to get the system working properly. And President Obama plans to speak publicly about the problems Monday. But in the meantime, the website is producing far more complaints than anything else. • We all know that taking out a student loan requires filling out a raft of complicated paperwork, but paying it back, at least, ought to be simple. Unfortunately, it's not, the advocates over at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau inform us in a new report. Some loan servicers -- the companies lenders hire to collect payments on private student loans -- make a concerted effort to maximize fee

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Sean Williams]
Leading the charge higher was discount retailer Dollar General (NYSE: DG ) , which advanced 2.8% on a very weak day following a reiteration of "buy" from TheStreet.com yesterday. Dollar General is the type of company that will benefit from higher taxes and delayed tax refunds because it offers shoppers a clearly defined discount and no-hassle price points. There's always a concern that food inflation could creep back into the picture and stifle margin growth, but for now everything appears to be working in its favor.

Murray Close, Warner Bros./AP From a major banking institution kicking off the new earnings season to the most-anticipated theme park debut of the year staging its grand opening, here are some things that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- Food for Thought The market's going to get off to a slow start on the news front. That's not a surprise given that it was closed Friday for Independence Day. One company that will be in the news on Monday is food and industrial products maker Penford (PENX). Penford's wide range of products include food ingredients, pet and animal products, sustainable bioproducts, starches for paper and packaging products and biofuels. Analysts see Penford earning 21 cents a share, but keep in mind that it has come up short against Wall Street expectations in each of the three previous quarters. Tuesday -- Harry Potter Central Florida will be a bit busier than usual on Tuesday when Comcast's (CMCSK) Universal Orlando has its grand opening of the new Diagon Alley expansion to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It's been a rough start. July 8 wasn't the opening date that the park originally wanted, judging by the fact that it had "The Tonight Show" and "Today" run weeklong tie-ins a few weeks ago. Conveniently for Comcast, it owns both the Universal theme parks and NBC. However, with the expansion's indoor coaster proving unreliable -- and even Universal pass holders being denied early access to attractions outside of the new Hogwarts Express train ride -- it could be an interesting debut. The crowds should be huge, the expectations lofty. Wednesday -- Mopping Up WD-40 (WDFC) reports on Wednesday afternoon. This is the company behind the multi-use lubricant. It also offers industrial cleaners, toilet sanitizers and other compounds. WD-40 didn't work out for its shareholders last time out. It posted better than expected 9 percent growth in revenue, but earnings fell just short of expectations. WD-4

The explanation for Kors' long-term performance is simple: The company is growing at an incredibly fast pace. In its previous quarter, sales rose 70% year over year. That's especially impressive when you consider that Coach (NYSE: COH ) has suffered from relatively weak sales growth lately, forcing the company to undertake a big strategic shift toward remaking itself as a "lifestyle" brand.

According to Cantor Fitzgerald analysts, Coach, Inc. (COH) has a bit of momentum going into the holiday season and beyond, plus an attractive current valuation. As such, the analysts initiated coverage on the luxury accessories designer with a bullish rating on Thursday.
The analysts rate COH as “Buy” and see shares reaching $66. This price target suggests a 21.5% upside to the stock’s Wednesday closing price of $54.30.
Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Allegra Perry said, “Given the prospect of visible results as early as Holiday 2013 and improved momentum thereafter, the current discounted valuation (13.9x, near a low-point since the financial crisis) offers a compelling opportunity to enter a high quality luxury turnaround story, in our view. Beyond FY14E, improved trends in North America coupled with strong growth in international markets and the on-going share buyback program should help drive a return to double digit earnings growth from FY15E. The stock is also well-supported by yield, with the highest free cash flow yield in our coverage universe (c.6.3%) and one of the highest dividend yields (c.2.4%).”
Coach shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Thursday. The stock is down 2.18% year-to-date.

Coach (COH) has become one of the predominant brands in luxury hand bags. This classic American brand has been falling for 9 months now due to fears that it can't compete effectively against its competitors. At my purchase price the company was trading at roughly 14x earnings. Michael Kors Holdings Ltd., Coach's largest rival currently trades at 32.5x earnings. Coach's bags are still sought after in the market place and I see this recent lack of investor confidence to be a short term phase. COH maintains a 72.76% gross margin and a 21.31% net profit margin. The company's management effectiveness statistics caught my eye as well (ROA: 32.93%, ROE: 53.18%, ROI: 43.77%). COH pays a $0.30 quarterly dividend which represents a 2.41 yield on cost of my original purchase. The company's payout ratio is 30.5%. Coach does not have a strong history of dividend growth; this is a company that I bought into because I believe it to be severely under valued. I believe that this stock is due for a rebound and I hope to take profits off of it when it does.

Linda Davidson/The Washington Post via Getty ImagesShoppers at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Oxon Hill, Md. There are few forms of shopping I enjoy more than outlet shopping. There is something about all of those discount stores packed so closely together that makes me super excited! But I am not going to tell you that all outlet stores are a good deal, because some of them are not. Also, brands sometimes create cheaper items to sell specifically in their outlet locations, and those are not always a smart buy. But for the most part, outlet malls are still an excellent way to save some money while picking up items for the entire family. Here are five ways to make the most of your trip to an outlet: 1. Figure out the outlet 'brand.' There are a couple of management companies that own quite a few outlet malls in the United States, including Premium Outlets (SPG) and Tanger Factory Outlet Centers (SKT). Before heading out, be sure to check the website for the entire outlet mall for any possible deals or coupons. Premium and Tanger Outlets also have Facebook (FB) pages where they will occasionally post coupons that you can print from home. 2. Look for an outlet discount card or VIP program. Many outlet malls have VIP savings programs that can save you big bucks throughout the year and also give you special access to new promotions and sales. The Fashion Outlets of Chicago opened last year and offer a Green Savings Card that costs $5 for a yearly membership. Those with a Green Savings Card receive extra discounts at a huge number of stores and restaurants in the mall, which is on top of the already low prices. 3. 'Like' the outlet store on Facebook. If there is an outlet store that you frequent, go ahead and like its Facebook page so that you will be one of the first to know about sales and promotions. The Kate Spade Outlet (KATE) will frequently post promotions to Facebook before emailing subscribers. The J. Crew Factory Store has offered special promotions th
