Alkermes (NASDAQ: ALKS ) is up big today on phase 2 data suggesting that its depression drug ALKS 5461 works.
The drug produced a statistically significant improvement in three different rating scales for depression compared to placebo. Alkermes didn't add any numbers to the top-line data; it's saving them for a medical meeting at the end of next month.
Clinical trials for depression are notoriously hard to run because of high placebo effect. It'll be interesting to see if ALKS 5461 was statistically significant because Alkermes was able to keep the placebo group in check or if the drug just blew away the typically high placebo.
A taming of the placebo effect would be good for the development of depression drugs, but we'll have to see if Alkermes can repeat it in a larger phase 3 trial. If ALKS 5461 is just super powerful, it's easier to see how the data could be reproduced in the next trial.
Alkermes is testing ALKS 5461 in patients who have already failed a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, such as Pfizer's (NYSE: PFE ) Zoloft, or a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, such as Eli Lilly's (NYSE: LLY ) Cymbalta. In theory that makes it harder to prove efficacy, but it also makes it much easier to sell the drug because it won't be in direct competition with those drugs, especially considering the large number of generic drugs available.

If you take a look at the chart for Insys Therapeutics, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last six months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $9.30 to its recent high of $53.64 a share. During that uptrend, shares of INSY have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of INSY have recently pulled back to its 50-day moving average and the stock has now started to spike higher off that level. That spike is starting to push shares of INSY within range of triggering a big breakout trade.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in INSY if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $43.50 to $44.52 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 235,266 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then INSY will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $47.25 to its all-time high at $53.64 a share.
Traders can look to buy INSY off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some near-term support at $38.75 a share or near its 50-day at $36.73 a share. One can also buy INSY off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

The small molecule ELND005 (Scyllo-inositol) is a beta amyloid anti-aggregation agent. Preclinical data suggest that ELND005 may act through the mechanism of preventing and reversing the fibrilisation of beta amyloid (the aggregation of beta amyloid into clumps of insoluble oligomers). ELND005 may have additional applications in psychiatric indications, such as bipolar disorder. In November 2011, the Company entered into a manufacturing agreement for the supply of the active pharmaceutical ingredient for ELND005 with Lonza Group AG.

Recently, too, Celgene has formed a strategic partnership with OncoMed (OMED) to develop up to six anti-cancer stem-cell antibodies.
Celgene itself has posted four successive quarters of revenue growth, which is expected to lift annual sales from $5.5 to $6.4 billion for calendar 2013, and to $7.5 billion in 2014. Despite its expanding size, earnings per share are projected to grow by 23.2% a year, by 28 Street analysts following its stock.

Volume % Change: 155%From a technical perspective, OMED ripped higher here right above previous support at $16.57 with above-average volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last four months and change, with shares moving lower from its high of $28.43 to its recent low of $16.57. During that move, shares of OMED have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of OMED have now starting to rebound off some previous support and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if OMED manages to clear some near-term overhead resistance levels at $19.17 to its 50-day at $19.92 and then above more resistance at $20 with high volume.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in OMED as long as it's trending above some key near-term support at $16.57 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 178,792 shares. If that breakout kicks off soon, then OMED will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $21.80 to $22.43, or even $24 to $24.48.
